The new version (2010-2011) of Hypérion-Éos is written for Jeffrey Lyman who premiered it at Britton Recital Hall - University of Michigan. The first version (2009) was premiered at Ircam in Paris. Studio recording: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan Bassoon : Jeffrey Lyman Original format: 24 bit - Quadraphonic Hypérion-Éos is a meditation on two poems of Hölderlin: Hyperions Schicksalslied and Der Frühling. The first and the second sections, Hypérion I and II - the name similarly evokes one of the titans of Greek Mythology - are articulated via an alternation around three different "moments": a leap toward the heights, a somber cry and a slow descent. The figure of Stockhausen is evoked through a short reworked fragment from one of his works. Éos - dawn in ancient Greek, the daughter of Hypérion - symbolizes the new light, a young sky that carries a profound peace, the desire to rise. The hope of a new dawn. The slow and serene rising turns of the solo instrument radiate a profound calm, a superhuman peace, becoming at times almost expressive. The phrases unfold from a single core - a symbol - where sound and silence complement each other in perfect equilibrium. Near the end, on the surface of the slow ascending chant emerges a recomposed fragment of a very early piece of ancient Greek music dating from 2400 years ago. Hypérion-Éos can qualify as symbolic music. The piece is entirely developed from a synthetic and unifying musical element, but it has a dual nature as <b>...</b>
